ANTON BARBEAU – Psychedelic Mynde Of Moses (2012)

ANTON BARBEAU –
Psychedelic Mynde Of Moses
2012 (7” FdM Records)
www.antonbarbeau.com

I learned about this guy, just recently (2010) with his super-cool-psychedelic-pop creation “Psychedelic Mynde of Moses”. It is obvious that this one caught the eyes (and ears of course) of Keith’s FdM label. So, what we have here is a delicious vinyl single, with 2 cover versions and a re-arranged version of “Psychedelic Mynde of Moses”. This version pretty close to the original features Nick Saloman of The Bevis Frond on guitar, so more talking (writing) would be needless. “Sometimes I Wish I Was A Pretty Girl” was originally released on 1984 Robyn Hitchcock’s album “I Often Dream Of Trains”, Ant took this song, relented and sweetened it a bit and presents it under a marvellous psychedelic 80s way. Ant, except Robyn, pays his dues to another cult-80s-resuscitator of the 60s- figure, the mighty Julian Cope. “Out Of My Mind On Dope And Speed” was originally included on Cope’s 5th solo album “Skellington” in 1989 and Julian would be really proud of Anton’s remake of the song. Period… I just only wish to add a subtitle on this FdM’s release; “The Art of Making 3-minute Psych-Pop Priceless Rubies”. TimeLord Michalis

PRISMA CIRCUS / NOMEGA – Prisma Circus / Nomega (2012)

PRISMA CIRCUS / NOMEGA –
Prisma Circus / Nomega
2012 (Split LP Nasoni Records)
www.nasoni-records.com

Another Nasoni record destined to be a classic by its first day of release. Two promising bands sharing from each side of this split (only LP) release. Prisma Circus are a powerful trio, born in 2010 in Catalonia, Barcelona and A side includes their debut EP (released earlier in February as a digital download). Opening track “The Great Car” is an early 70s heavy rock number with a psych middle section getting harder with a distinctive acid guitar sound as the grooves spin. “Paradox” is a mix of early Thin Lizzy with Captain Beyond, a wild heavy n’ roll tune with lots of fuzzy wah wah guitars and bluesy vocals. “The Light” is a Zeppelinesque Hendrix flavored dynamic song with hot guitar licks becoming alternately from hard to more blues psych. Side closes with “The Genius” a heavy blues number with echoed vocals. Inspired band with excellent song writing, the future is theirs. Nomega are an energetic improvisational jam quartet hailing from Timisoara, Romania, existing no longer than 2 years and this is a demo EP recorded earlier this year that occupies Side B of this split album. Just 2 tracks, will do the job. “Samsara (Ebb & Flow)” starts hypnotically becoming a psych-stoner jam with various tempo changes and lots of ‘psyched’ guitar noise on the background while “Mountain Tusk (Collision & Collapse)” shows its intentions from the very first second. A wild stoner with a few dispersed words (is it stoner-psych poetry? Cool!!!) and when the speech is over, psych weirdness takes the leading role in a psychedelic guitar driven sound. We are here to worship sound. “We are here to influence your psyche. WE ARE HERE TO MAKE SOME NOISE!” Well done boys, it took you less than 20min to succeed! TimeLord Michalis

STONED JESUS – Seven Thunders Roar (2012)

STONED JESUS – Seven Thunders Roar
2012 (LP Nasoni Records)
www.stonedjesus.bandcamp.com

This is the 2nd release by this heavy-stoner-psych band hailing from Eastern Europe (Ukraine) and by now you must have learned that if it’s on Nasoni Records then the ‘musical’ quality is guaranteed. Album kicks off with “Bright Like The Morning” (8:40), starting in a slow vein, becoming a fast stoner psych tune and reducing speed at the end. “Electric Mistress” (9:20) makes you wonder where the hell those decibels are coming from, with its 70s hard rock feel and the image of a really young Ozzy singing in a Tool record. Atmosphere becomes heavy mystical in the middle thanks to all those Sabbath slow torturous riffs. Side A closes with “Indian” (5:00), another Sabbathetic stoner. Side B opens with the Magnificent “I’m The Mountain” (12:45), an epic prog tune starting in a slow acoustic way, becoming progressively a heavy psych stoner journey with inspired lyrics. Album closes with “Stormy Monday” (not the classic one) (9:35), a mid-tempo stoner balladesque song, slowing down when lyrics are entering, with a Monster Magnet feel (circa Superjudge). An inspired combination of stoner and psych under a heavy rock 70s vein in an astonishing fresh way! TimeLord Michalis

SULA BASSANA – Dark Days (2012)

SULA BASSANA – Dark Days
2012 (2LP/CD Sulatron Records)
www.sulatron.com

After 2009’s masterpiece of space-rock “The Night” I have been waiting with much anticipation (he’s been busy with numerous side-projects) the follow-up solo album of Dave Schmidt (Sula Bassana). SpaceHead Dave, this time leaves behind his atmospheric far-out space rock and moves into more earthly space rock paths (whatever that means!) As always, Dave wrote the music and the minimum lyrics, recorded, mixed and produced the whole project between 2007 and 2012. He also proves in the best way how qualified a multi-instrumentalist he’s been acting like. Every single sound is played by Dave with the exception of a couple tracks that his partner in Electric Moon Pablo Carneval lends with his drum abilities. The dark artwork (coming straight from Dante’s Inferno) was done by Komet Lulu (bassist of Electric Moon) and the album was mastered by this legendary Kraut-guy Eroc. 6 tracks in over 70 min timing. Album starts with “Underground” (9:39min), a powerful space-rocker ala Hawkwind with a Zeppelin guitar sound. There are a few ‘lost-in-space’ vocals in this one, by David Henriksson (from Sweden’s finest psych-garage-spacers The Movements). Track becomes dreamy after a while and it is built upon a heavy guitar chord leaving too much ‘space’ to experiment. Most of the times (on all his previous releases) Sula was out there, high up in the faraway sky of another universes playing space-rock music. Well, it seems now, that he is on earth, with his feet on the ground, performing AFSR (Awesome Fucking Space Rock)! Without even noticing “Departure” (6:00min) has taken off. Starts in an acoustic spacey way in a steady monotonous rhythm with lots of space effects going on and becomes dark at times. This is A Modern Space Krautrock Anthem! “Surrealistic Journey” (20:17min) follows. Weird sounds at the opening with a really psychedelic organ sounding. Journey is about to start. Where to? Who cares? Drums are beating faster, atmosphere becomes darker. In the middle of the journey, tune becomes mystical, the unearthly soundscapes are flooding my ears. I can hear the Colors… This is New Age Psychedelic Space Rock! A Surrealistic Journey INDEED! “Dark Days” (9:05min) is built upon a fuzzy distorted guitar sound with a steady dark beat, tribal sounding at times and with its cinematic dramatic theme, makes me wonder, is this The End of Days? An antipodal “Bright Nights” (9:46min) follows. It starts in a moody dark way with weird sounds, guitar's playfulness emitting an experimental feel with improvised noises and after 6 min the now-familiar steady drum beat takes over, only to bring more darkness in the atmosphere (despite track’s title). Album closes with “Arriving Nowhere” (16:46min), starts in a danceable (?!) way with a groovy up-beat rhythm, wah-wah guitar sounding, lots of spacey effects, till the robotic synths take over to make it an electronic Kraut rock experiment with a transcendalized psych tribal minimalistic rhythm and spaced-out stoned guitars. Really trippy. Makes me shout “Careful with that Acid, Sula!” The “Arriving Nowhere” title is only here to disorientate us. This One is “Arriving Everywhere”! Space… The Final Frontier… had fallen… Still July, but it’s probably one of the Best Albums in 2012! TimeLord Michalis

VARIOUS ARTISTS – Keep Off The Grass (2011)

VARIOUS ARTISTS – Keep Off The Grass
2011 (LP Fruits De Mer Records FdM21)
www.fruitsdemerrecords.com

If you aren’t familiar with the releases of Fruits de Mer Records, and if you’re somehow new to this complicated psychedelic fuzz n’ flower “genre” then this 19-track double LP compilation is the perfect way to start digging the glorious underground psych past of the late 60s early 70s era. On the other hand if you happen to be a truly aficionado of the psych-past, then these ‘reinterpretations’ will make the admiration to these new bands become much stronger. What we have here, is a bunch of “revivers” hailing from the UK, USA, France, Spain and Finland, paying the dues to “classic” 60s Psychedelia by the likes of well-known names (Pink Floyd, The Byrds, Sky Saxon, Jefferson Airplane, Beatles, Traffic, Chocolate Watch Band, Amboy Dukes, Tomorrow, Thunderclap Newman) and also less-known names (The Godz, Skip Spence, John’s Children, Aquarian Age, Nazz, Gemini, Good Feeling’s, Marc Brierley). It’s really hard to pick favorites, but versions like Sendelica’s “Journey To The Center Of The Mind” or Permanent Clear Light’s “Cymbaline” or Sky Picnic’s “Revolution” could re-start the “carrier” of each one of these songs into the nowadays “bored” charts! The year is 2012, and we are experiencing a lack of color. This compilation, these versions, are so god damn colorful! So old but so new! So psychedelically fresh! Just play the vinyl records and try to smell the incense coming straight from the record’s grooves… This is the Best Compilation album of 2011, An Absolutely Fully Mind-Blowing Expanding Psychedelic Experience! Besides, the color vinyl, besides the amazing gatefold sleeve, besides the 19 lil’ pieces of modern-re-arranged-psychedelia, there’s another great surprise. Album comes with a wonderful packet of joss-sticks! Fruits de Mer’s special Blend designed to enhance your listening pleasure! So, after all, it wasn’t so hard to keep off the grass, right Sam? TimeLordMichalis

VARIOUS ARTISTS – Psychedelic World Music – Discovery 2012

VARIOUS ARTISTS – Psychedelic World
Music – Discovery 2012 (CD Trail Records)
www.trailrecords.net

I must admit that Trail Records from New York is doing a tremendous job in discovering and promoting artists from around the globe who have as their mission to perform original music inspired by the Unknown Glorious Paths of the 60s and the 70s. This is a compilation of new recordings (2005-2012) by young and relatively unknown artists hailing from different parts of the world. 9 bands, 9 songs (6 of them previously unreleased), 9 different countries with 1 common musical vision, the Psychedelic One! Comp starts with COSMIC VIBRATION (Germany) performing “Aurora” (6:54), a Kosmique Space Rock tune with a steady floating psychedelic vibe and a wondrous guitar sound, followed by TRIPTYCH (UK) on “Origins Of Life” (6:19), continues flow of holy water on an ambient eastern influenced tune that differs from mystical to trippy psychedelic depending on the guitar sound. THE MISTERIOSOS (USA) – the only known band to me from this comp – participate with “The Sun” (9:09), a Floyd influence track (circa Saucerful) with wandering lucid female vocals, a tribal rhythm section and a delicate 60s L.A. guitar sound although the farfisa lends a more garage psych feeling towards its end. “Sixty Nine” (6:50) is a moody improvised guitar based psychedelic jam becoming trippy or heavy at times by MOUCHES A L’ORANGE (Belarus). “Kele Lao” (6:45) by DETI PICASSO (Armenia) follows, in an acidly flavoured psych atmosphere with beautiful female vocals (sung in their home language) flirting with folk and prog. A brilliant example that Music Is Universal! GREY MOUSE (Russia) performs “Snow (Spiral Walk)” (7:24), the sitar adds an Eastern atmosphere, trippy, dreamy that flirts at times with jazz, with a little female ‘scat’ singing till the guitar takes the lead role and the track is taking a heavy psych vein into a crescendo of female vocals at the end. PLOOTOH’s (Italy) “Caronte” (6:06) starts slowly in a moody psychedelic way with a dreamy guitar sound and a few melancholic male vocals towards its end. “The Crazy Dwarf” (9:19) is a trippy improvised jam based on guitars and sitars upon a psychedelized rhythm section with lots of experimentation going on and echoed female vocals by THE NARCOTIC DAFFODILS (Belgium). Last one is ZHAOZE (China) playing “Fishing For The Stars” (6:25), an improvised freejam starting unplugged with acoustic guitars, but becoming really post-psych when the electric power is back on! What A Discovery! Thank you Trail Records! Thank you Alexander! TimeLord Michalis

VIBRAVOID – Gravity Zero (2012)

VIBRAVOID – Gravity Zero
2012 (LP/CD Sulatron Records)
www.vibravoid.com

First of all I’d like to Thank Dr. Christian for including here the 7” version of HP Lovecraft’s “The White Ship”, originally released as a split single with Psychedelic Fanzine TimeMazine (Issue #6 – Autumn 2011). For those who weren't aware this is a nice chance to experience and admire Vibravoid’s unique creativity! So, just a few months from their latest release (“Minddrugs”), Vibravoid are here once more, faithful to their standard rendezvous with the Underground People. Another Vibravoid album. Another Psych Underground Masterpiece! Another Acid punch in ya psychedelic face! Colorful, Mind-blowing, a Vibravoid standard! The vinyl edition includes 9 songs in total, 6 new original tunes and 3 vibra-cover versions that have been recently released (“No Silver Bird”, “Shot Gun Wedding” and “The White Ship”). All three have been previously reviewed so let’s stick to the new ones. “Gravitation Zero” is an over-effected 13:23min Heavy Acidly psychedelic future-trip in time and space. “Photosynthesis In Darkness” is a just 3:08min timeless psych-alarm. “Travelling Without Moving” is a Cocktail with experimental weird sounds from outer space, an interlude of just 1:38min. Side B opens with a Flower Children Anthem, the psychedelic revelation of “Eruptions Of The Green Sun”, 4:03min long with a great use of sitar and wonderful inspired lyrics. “Get Out Of Here” (4:14min) comes in the same reverberated Vibra-motive, hard to believe that Doctor Koch wrote a song about… Hate! (Love is Freedom… Remember Christian?) Vinyl closes with “BrainPlane”, eastern influenced with lots of dope using all the kinds of effects that they can handle, an out of Reality tune, indeed. CD includes 2 bonus cuts… A Smash Hit Album! Space, Up Your Face… End of Transmitting… TimeLord Michalis
