THE CHEMISTRY SET – Kiss Me Vibrate And Smile (2012)

THE CHEMISTRY SET –
Kiss Me Vibrate And Smile
2012 (7” FdM Records)
www.myspace.com/thechemistrysetuk

The Chemistry Set (having a remarkable Underground ‘career’) reformed in 2008 after a 17 years break, and this is their 2nd 7” vinyl release on Fruits de Mer, band’s mother-figure label. Single contains 2 original compositions and 1 cover. “Come Kiss Me Vibrate And Smile” is a powerful sanguine fresh modern poppy-psych song with discreet fuzzy and backwards guitar sound. “Time To Breathe” is a slow number so 60s inspired, so British neo-psych! Lyrics like “Let the World pass by, it’s Time to Breathe…” are melting perfectly with the guitar driven psychedelic vein and the sublime harmony vocals. Their cover version to Tomorrow’s “Hallucinations” is pretty much the same as the original with a freshly modern touch that shows great musicianship despite the 17 years of “hiatus”. If this one is just a precursor to their full album, then I dare to say that the over-20-years anticipation for an album was definitely worth waiting for! TimeLord Michalis

BARRETT ELMORE – Woodlands (2012)

BARRETT ELMORE – Woodlands
2012 (CD Trail Records)
www.soundcloud.com/barrettelmore

Barrett Elmore is not a person. Barrett Elmore is a 4piece creative unit hailing from somewhere in Sweden, formed in 2008. It’s Claes Mikael Svensson on drums, percussion and backing vocals, Max Karlstrom on bass, vocals, organ, harmonica, syntheziser, Mikaela Eriksson on vocals, William Friman on guitar, piano, organ and THEY Love to Play Psychedelic music, to “clear your mind” as they state. This is their debut album, an album dipped deeply inside the early progressive 70s, the psychedelic side of Pink Floyd, the experimental side of Morrison’s Doors, the Swedish folklore. It’s quite impressive how much creativity and musicianship the Swedish Woods are hiding! Prog Acid Folk in a natural mystical psychedelic vein! Melancholic but Optimistic. Dark but Lightly Clear. Old-fashioned but Newly Fresh. Wonderful! Album consists of 10 songs in a flowing continuous order plus an eleventh, a 12min bonus track. It takes off with “Entrance” (1:55min), which despite its length is an ideal instrumental beginning that captivates all the woods’ sounds under a haunted organ sound and a distinctive drumming. “The Creek” (3:16min) is a folkie acoustic dreamy ballad with female fairy vocals. “I See A Man” (1:30min) gets us deeper into the forest with a steady – but creepy - rhythm piano sound. Without even noticing we've moved to “The Nixie” (4:01min), a mystical journey into consciousness with male whispering vocals starting eerie and transitioning into a trippy heavy guitar sounding masterpiece. “Drowning” (3:58min) is an acid guitar driven track with much distorted ala Jim Morrison vocals. “Storm” (4:24min) hits you like a summer rain inside a forest. It’s an instrumental prog tune starting with backward sounds adding tremolo fuzzy guitars and a beautiful organ sound. “The Brook Horse” is another acid-psych tune with really incomprehensible male vocals. “Lost In A Swamp” (2:25min) is an imaginary little piece of music with Calliope sounding keyboards that gives you the feeling of another age, maybe Renaissance. “Dusk (Dance Of The Pixies)” (4:21min) is another cool gentle ballad, a little more hallucinogenic this time. Oh those Mushrooms! They’re hiding deep in the woods. But once you find them… “Woodlands” (3:29min) has wondrous female harmony vocals with a real moody psychedelic guitar passage that sets you right there, in the middle of the forest, in a glade that no one else can see, except the listener/traveller. Album closes with the bonus track “Psilocybe Semilanceata” (12:06min). A mystical - becoming either hauntingly scary either tranquil at times - epos! Just imagine the Masters, playing the entire Ummagumma Live at the Pompeii! Wood-e-licious! TimeLord Michalis

STONED JESUS – Seven Thunders Roar (2012)

STONED JESUS – Seven Thunders Roar
2012 (LP Nasoni Records)
www.stonedjesus.bandcamp.com

This is the 2nd release by this heavy-stoner-psych band hailing from Eastern Europe (Ukraine) and by now you must have learned that if it’s on Nasoni Records then the ‘musical’ quality is guaranteed. Album kicks off with “Bright Like The Morning” (8:40), starting in a slow vein, becoming a fast stoner psych tune and reducing speed at the end. “Electric Mistress” (9:20) makes you wonder where the hell those decibels are coming from, with its 70s hard rock feel and the image of a really young Ozzy singing in a Tool record. Atmosphere becomes heavy mystical in the middle thanks to all those Sabbath slow torturous riffs. Side A closes with “Indian” (5:00), another Sabbathetic stoner. Side B opens with the Magnificent “I’m The Mountain” (12:45), an epic prog tune starting in a slow acoustic way, becoming progressively a heavy psych stoner journey with inspired lyrics. Album closes with “Stormy Monday” (not the classic one) (9:35), a mid-tempo stoner balladesque song, slowing down when lyrics are entering, with a Monster Magnet feel (circa Superjudge). An inspired combination of stoner and psych under a heavy rock 70s vein in an astonishing fresh way! TimeLord Michalis

SULA BASSANA – Dark Days (2012)

SULA BASSANA – Dark Days
2012 (2LP/CD Sulatron Records)
www.sulatron.com

After 2009’s masterpiece of space-rock “The Night” I have been waiting with much anticipation (he’s been busy with numerous side-projects) the follow-up solo album of Dave Schmidt (Sula Bassana). SpaceHead Dave, this time leaves behind his atmospheric far-out space rock and moves into more earthly space rock paths (whatever that means!) As always, Dave wrote the music and the minimum lyrics, recorded, mixed and produced the whole project between 2007 and 2012. He also proves in the best way how qualified a multi-instrumentalist he’s been acting like. Every single sound is played by Dave with the exception of a couple tracks that his partner in Electric Moon Pablo Carneval lends with his drum abilities. The dark artwork (coming straight from Dante’s Inferno) was done by Komet Lulu (bassist of Electric Moon) and the album was mastered by this legendary Kraut-guy Eroc. 6 tracks in over 70 min timing. Album starts with “Underground” (9:39min), a powerful space-rocker ala Hawkwind with a Zeppelin guitar sound. There are a few ‘lost-in-space’ vocals in this one, by David Henriksson (from Sweden’s finest psych-garage-spacers The Movements). Track becomes dreamy after a while and it is built upon a heavy guitar chord leaving too much ‘space’ to experiment. Most of the times (on all his previous releases) Sula was out there, high up in the faraway sky of another universes playing space-rock music. Well, it seems now, that he is on earth, with his feet on the ground, performing AFSR (Awesome Fucking Space Rock)! Without even noticing “Departure” (6:00min) has taken off. Starts in an acoustic spacey way in a steady monotonous rhythm with lots of space effects going on and becomes dark at times. This is A Modern Space Krautrock Anthem! “Surrealistic Journey” (20:17min) follows. Weird sounds at the opening with a really psychedelic organ sounding. Journey is about to start. Where to? Who cares? Drums are beating faster, atmosphere becomes darker. In the middle of the journey, tune becomes mystical, the unearthly soundscapes are flooding my ears. I can hear the Colors… This is New Age Psychedelic Space Rock! A Surrealistic Journey INDEED! “Dark Days” (9:05min) is built upon a fuzzy distorted guitar sound with a steady dark beat, tribal sounding at times and with its cinematic dramatic theme, makes me wonder, is this The End of Days? An antipodal “Bright Nights” (9:46min) follows. It starts in a moody dark way with weird sounds, guitar's playfulness emitting an experimental feel with improvised noises and after 6 min the now-familiar steady drum beat takes over, only to bring more darkness in the atmosphere (despite track’s title). Album closes with “Arriving Nowhere” (16:46min), starts in a danceable (?!) way with a groovy up-beat rhythm, wah-wah guitar sounding, lots of spacey effects, till the robotic synths take over to make it an electronic Kraut rock experiment with a transcendalized psych tribal minimalistic rhythm and spaced-out stoned guitars. Really trippy. Makes me shout “Careful with that Acid, Sula!” The “Arriving Nowhere” title is only here to disorientate us. This One is “Arriving Everywhere”! Space… The Final Frontier… had fallen… Still July, but it’s probably one of the Best Albums in 2012! TimeLord Michalis

VARIOUS ARTISTS – Psychedelic World Music – Discovery 2012

VARIOUS ARTISTS – Psychedelic World
Music – Discovery 2012 (CD Trail Records)
www.trailrecords.net

I must admit that Trail Records from New York is doing a tremendous job in discovering and promoting artists from around the globe who have as their mission to perform original music inspired by the Unknown Glorious Paths of the 60s and the 70s. This is a compilation of new recordings (2005-2012) by young and relatively unknown artists hailing from different parts of the world. 9 bands, 9 songs (6 of them previously unreleased), 9 different countries with 1 common musical vision, the Psychedelic One! Comp starts with COSMIC VIBRATION (Germany) performing “Aurora” (6:54), a Kosmique Space Rock tune with a steady floating psychedelic vibe and a wondrous guitar sound, followed by TRIPTYCH (UK) on “Origins Of Life” (6:19), continues flow of holy water on an ambient eastern influenced tune that differs from mystical to trippy psychedelic depending on the guitar sound. THE MISTERIOSOS (USA) – the only known band to me from this comp – participate with “The Sun” (9:09), a Floyd influence track (circa Saucerful) with wandering lucid female vocals, a tribal rhythm section and a delicate 60s L.A. guitar sound although the farfisa lends a more garage psych feeling towards its end. “Sixty Nine” (6:50) is a moody improvised guitar based psychedelic jam becoming trippy or heavy at times by MOUCHES A L’ORANGE (Belarus). “Kele Lao” (6:45) by DETI PICASSO (Armenia) follows, in an acidly flavoured psych atmosphere with beautiful female vocals (sung in their home language) flirting with folk and prog. A brilliant example that Music Is Universal! GREY MOUSE (Russia) performs “Snow (Spiral Walk)” (7:24), the sitar adds an Eastern atmosphere, trippy, dreamy that flirts at times with jazz, with a little female ‘scat’ singing till the guitar takes the lead role and the track is taking a heavy psych vein into a crescendo of female vocals at the end. PLOOTOH’s (Italy) “Caronte” (6:06) starts slowly in a moody psychedelic way with a dreamy guitar sound and a few melancholic male vocals towards its end. “The Crazy Dwarf” (9:19) is a trippy improvised jam based on guitars and sitars upon a psychedelized rhythm section with lots of experimentation going on and echoed female vocals by THE NARCOTIC DAFFODILS (Belgium). Last one is ZHAOZE (China) playing “Fishing For The Stars” (6:25), an improvised freejam starting unplugged with acoustic guitars, but becoming really post-psych when the electric power is back on! What A Discovery! Thank you Trail Records! Thank you Alexander! TimeLord Michalis

CRANIUM PIE & THE RESEARCH STATION – A Visit To Newport Hospital (Review by TimeLord Michalis)

CRANIUM PIE & THE RESEARCH STATION – A Visit To Newport Hospital
2012 (7” Fruits de Mer Records)
www.craniumpie.co.uk

Two things. Either they’ve been kidnapped by Aliens who did different kinds of experiments on them, or they must have spent some time in Psychiatric Insane Asylums… There’s no other ‘logical’ explanation. Either the one or the other! When it finally comes to music it works out so tremendously genius and psychedelicious and experimentally amazing! Modern prog at its best! There’s a whole factory of sounds inside their minds… This time, their ‘victims’ are two Underground songs from the Glorious past. On the A side the band modifies “A Visit to Newport Hospital” originally released by Egg in their 1970 album “Polite Force”. They create a spacey & adventurous atmosphere with weird sounds, effected vocals, guitars, keyboards, without moving too far from the original. In the meantime on the B side they execute Hillage and Stewart Arzachel’s “Queen St Gang” taken from their sole album “Arzachel” in 1969 (originally by Keith Mansfield as “Soul Thing”). The band gets more spacey, more weird, driving us to unknown prog-psych paths. A psychedelically ingenious mentally insane progressive experiment!!! Impatiently waiting for the follow-up to “Mechanisms”…  TimeLord Michalis
